The PSP (short for PlayStation Portable) is Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE)'s weapon to conquer the mobile / handheld gaming console market. It was first introduced during E3 2003 event and later officially announced on May 11, 2004, at Sony Press Conference before E3 2004. The gaming system was released on December 12, 2004 in Japan, followed by North America on March 24, 2005, and finally on PAL region on September 1, 2005. It was the first handheld video game system to feature optical disc format known as Universal Media Disc (UMD).

In the middle of 2007, July 11 to be precise, a new version of PSP was introduced during Sony's press conference at E3 2007 event. Called "Slim and Lite", this upgraded version comes with slimmer and lighter body. It finally released in September 2007 in US, Europe, and Japan.
